Colorado’s New Rule: Corporate Registration Before Charitable Solicitation
November 7, 2025California Launches New Online System for Charitable Registration

The California Attorney General’s Registry of Charities and Fundraisers has launched a new online filing system. This system is now used exclusively for initial charitable solicitation registrations. California plans to move additional filing types, including renewals, into this system in 2026. The state has not yet shared the exact date when the older systems will be retired.
Why It Matters for Nonprofits
Most nonprofits that solicit donations in California are required to register with the state. Keeping this registration active helps organizations maintain good standing, build donor trust, and avoid penalties. The new system is part of California’s effort to simplify the filing process and make it easier to track.
Currently, only first-time registrations are processed through the new system. If your organization is renewing, you will continue using the current platform until the state transitions renewals to the updated system in 2026.
What Nonprofits Should Do Now
This change is a good time to review your internal processes. Ensure that the individuals responsible for fundraising or state filings are aware of this update and are prepared to utilize the new system for initial registrations. Gathering your required documents early, such as financial reports and governing documents, will make future filings easier once the full system is launched.
You can view the announcement and access the new system on the California Attorney General’s website.
