The National Football League is giving up its tax-exempt status. The NFL, a 501(c)(6), was granted tax-exempt status in 1942. Its tax-exempt status had required the NFL to disclose the salaries of its officials and abide by other rules governing nonprofits. Going forward, the NFL plans to file as a for-profit company despite the additional $10 million in taxes per year that Citizens for Tax Justice expect it will pay as a for-profit entity.
