California Attorney General Increases Charity Registration Fees and Updates Registration Forms for 2022
Effective January 1, 2022, the California Attorney General Registry of Charitable Trusts is introducing a new filing fee schedule and updated forms for most types of organizations. These forms and fees are to be used with any registrations “received by the Registry on or after January 1, 2022.” (source)
Who is affected by this change?
The following types of organizations face increased filing fees in 2022:
- Charitable Organizations
- Commercial Coventures
- Fundraising Counsel
- Commercial Fundraisers
- Raffle Registrants
Representatives from each of these types of organizations should continue reading to learn about the increased fees and new forms.
What does this mean for my organization?
California’s across-the-board increase in filing fees, unfortunately, means additional cost to charities, commercial fundraisers, fundraising counsel, and commercial coventures that register and report annually. Most impacted are nonprofit organizations with annual total revenue exceeding $5 million, which now pay anywhere between $400 and $1,200 to the state of California. Only Massachusetts and New York now assess a higher annual registration fee on soliciting charities.
Additionally, in light of the passage of Assembly Bill 488, most nonprofit organizations that solicit on charitable fundraising platforms will be required to register and remain in good standing with the state of California. As a result, these organizations can expect to pay the increased $50 registration fee in addition to the increased annual registration renewal fee.
Type of Filing | Old Fee (through December 31, 2021) | New Fee (after January 1, 2022) |
---|---|---|
Initial Charity Registration | $25 for first-time registration | $50 for first-time registration |
Renewal Charity Registration | $0-$300 annually (varies by the organization’s total revenue) | $25-$1,200 annually (varies by the organization’s total revenue) |
Commercial Coventure Annual Registration | $350 annually | $500 annually |
Fundraising Counsel Annual Registration | $350 annually | $500 annually |
Commercial Fundraiser Annual Registration | $350 annually | $500 annually |
Raffle Registration | $20 per raffle | $30 per raffle |
