IRS Form 990-N
The IRS Form 990-N is a filing that is required for nonprofits whose annual revenue is less than $50,000. The filing itself is considerably easier than the annual filings required by nonprofits with higher revenue, but still is not to be taken lightly. The IRS Form 990-N can be filed online on the IRS website, but can still be tricky for some small organizations to file. The IRS Form 990-N is due 4.5 months after the organization’s fiscal year end. Thus for an organization with a December year end, the 990-N is due May 15.
If an organization fails to file its IRS Form 990-N for three years, the IRS automatically revokes the organization’s Tax Exempt status. It will thus no longer be recognized as a nonprofit by the IRS.
